Following the breakout horror hit “Barbarian” and the narratively ambitious “Weapons,” both of which played with structure, time, and multi-threaded narratives, filmmaker Zach Cregger is going considerably more straightforward with “Resident Evil.” Fortunately for fans, the film’s linear, tightly locked-in approach doesn’t dull the visceral impact, coiled suspense, or nerve-wracking intensity of Cregger’s filmmaking.

Before a Live Reddit Q&A with Cregger in Los Angeles Monday night, Sony Pictures screened the first 30 minutes of “Resident Evil” for press, and the footage overdelivered on dread, jolting out-of-nowhere scares, and a queasy sense that something awful is waiting just beyond the corner of every frame.
